ECC-SAL International Mooting Competition 2024
The ECC-SAL International Mooting Competition 2024, co-organised by the members of Essex Court Chambers (ECC) and the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL), presents an ideal opportunity for young lawyers to showcase and hone their skills as advocates.
Now in its 12th year, the Competition is open to young advocates from Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore and South Korea.
All rounds of the Competition will take place in Singapore.

DATES OF THE COMPETITION
The preliminary rounds of the Competition are scheduled to take place on a round-robin basis. The remaining rounds will take place on an elimination basis, starting with the Quarter-Finals.
- Preliminaries: Thursday, 4 January 2024
- Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals: Friday, 5 January 2024
- Final round: Tuesday, 9 January 2024

ELIGIBILITY
Lawyers and legal service officers who have been qualified for practice for no more than three years as at 1 January 2024 are welcome to participate.
Teams may comprise mooters from the same or different law firms and organisations, with each participating firm or organisation asked to submit no more than two teams.
A reserve list of teams will be compiled in the event that more than two teams apply from the same organisation. The organisers will consider all relevant circumstances in each jurisdiction when interpreting the eligibility criteria, and the organising committee reserves the right to exercise discretion for its decisions.

REGISTRATION FEE
Upon confirmation of registration, a non-refundable entry fee per team of S$300.00 (inclusive of GST) is to be made payable to the “Singapore Academy of Law”.
PRIZE
The winning team will be offered an all expenses paid two-week internship at Essex Court Chambers in London, one of the leading commercial sets of barristers’ chambers in England.
Awards will also be given for the Best Speaker, Best Memorandum submitted and the Best International Team.
THE MOOT PROBLEM
There will be one Moot Problem with two issues. The Moot Problem will be based on a fictional case in the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) incorporating the SICC rules, subject only to contrary provisions in the Moot Handbook. The Moot Problem and Moot Handbook, which contains the rules of the Competition, will be released once registration has closed.
The Preliminary Rounds and Quarter-Finals will be based on a first-instance hearing before the SICC.
The Semi-Finals and Final Round will be based on an appeal from the SICC to the Singapore Court of Appeal. A judgment forming part of the Moot Problem will be released for the purposes of the later rounds of the Competition.
