Senior Counsel

Senior Counsel are an elite group of advocates who have top-tier advocacy skills, professional integrity and are learned in the law. They have a duty of leading and being an example to the rest of the Bar, especially younger members. They are also required to contribute to academic teaching, writing and research, and to the institutions of continuing legal education.

Senior Counsel are conferred with the title and the corresponding right to suffix their name with the initials “SC”. They have precedence over other advocates in the courts and tribunals of the land.

Once a year, SAL’s Senior Counsel Selection Committee, chaired by the Chief Justice of Singapore, evaluates applications and appoints persons deserving of this distinction as Senior Counsel. To date, 98 persons have been appointed Senior Counsel.
