LawNet in December: Updates with a practical focus
In the three months since the launch of LawNet 4.0, we’ve continued to enhance it to better integrate legal materials like case law, legal publications and legislation. Many members who used the previous version of LawNet (at lawnet.sg) would be familiar with the frantic “which tab was that?” search — as they cycle between these content types in different tabs.
Recent updates address this directly. You can now view referenced cases and related resources within the same page, without navigating away from your reading. This currently applies to judgments, regulatory decisions, journals, commentaries, and notices and directions.
That principle of “all in one” extends to how your research begins. LawNet 4.0’s Classic Search now brings together cases and secondary materials such as journals and commentaries, which were previously accessible only on lawnet.sg. In most situations, this means you now only need to work within LawNet.com. CLJ Law is the last remaining content type, and it will be available on LawNet.com next year.
Books fit naturally into this approach. You can now search within books on LawNet, much like you would on Google Books. If a topic is discussed in a particular legal publication, you will be able to see it in context — either in full (if you own the book or have an Academy Library subscription) or as a snippet (if you do not). This makes it easier to assess whether a book is worth consulting in depth. The intention is not to replace deeper reading, but to help you decide where that reading should begin.
Books that reference specific statutory provisions are also listed, starting with the Companies Act 1967. This creates a clearer link between legislation and relevant secondary commentary, and is part of our efforts to link different sources of information for a more complete research picture.
These are accompanied by small, but significant, refinements. Search filters remain visible while scrolling. Search logs for the AI-powered Q&A search add another layer of transparency by preserving a record of what you asked, what was generated, and which sources were used — particularly helpful given that AI-assisted searches may not return the same answer every time.
