Rallying the profession to uplift the community

Every year, about 9,000 inmates are released from prison.

Their real challenge begins the day they leave the prison doors.

For many ex-offenders, the transition from a controlled prison environment to the outside world is a struggle. Many would fail if left alone to do so. Hence, there is a need to provide them with continued support in the forms of halfway care and aftercare services. Based on the 2014 released cohorts, the penal recidivism rate is one in four.

As the representative body of Singapore’s legal profession and networked with professionals in all branches of the Singapore legal industry, SAL is in an ideal position to leverage these networks to support the community of ex-offenders. SAL has pledged to support the Yellow Ribbon Fund (YRF) and Singapore After-Care Association (SACA), two exemplar organisations from the after-care sector.

With the former, SAL offers the YRF-SAL STAR Bursary, which ex-offenders can tap on to meet their tertiary and vocational training needs. SAL also supports the SACA’s Volunteer After-Care Programme, which provides befriending services to newly released prisoners.

How we’re doing it

The CJ’s Cup, SAL’s flagship fundraising event, isn’t just about scoring goals; it’s about making a difference. Funds raised go to the Yellow Ribbon Fund - SAL STAR (Skills Training Assistance to Restart) Bursary. This tournament has also supported the Singapore After-Care Association’s Volunteer After-Care Programme since 2024.

Thanks to the incredible support from law firms, members, sponsors and donors, the CJ’s Cup has raised over $700,000 to date.

Here’s to more goals, goodwill, and giving in the years to come.
