Bankside Singapore-SAL Cross-Examination Competition

The Bankside Singapore–SAL Cross-Examination Competition 2026 is designed to give young lawyers a rare opportunity to develop and showcase their cross-examination skills in a realistic courtroom setting.

The Competition is jointly organised by the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) and Bankside Singapore, a leading set of Australasian barristers, arbitrators and mediators with deep expertise in advocacy and dispute resolution.

The Competition comprises a series of structured rounds involving live witnesses, assessors and moderators, with participants assessed on their performance in cross-examination and advocacy.

The Champion will receive a two-week placement with Bankside Singapore barristers in New Zealand, including return economy flights (from Singapore to Auckland), accommodation and a daily per diem. Awards will also be given for the First and Second Runner-Ups.

Criteria

The Competition is open to:

Lawyers and legal service officers with no more than six (6) years’ post-qualification experience in Singapore*

Lawyers from the same firm or organisation may participate

Participants of the JLP Cross-Examination and Experts module (4-5 March 2026) are eligible to advance to the Semi-Finals immediately

* For the purposes of this requirement, post-qualification experience is calculated from the date of call to the Bar, and must reflect active experience in disputes or litigation practice. Periods during which the applicant was not engaged in contentious legal work, whether due to a career break, a non-legal role, an in-house position, or transactional practice, shall not count towards the six-year threshold.

Illustrations:

A lawyer called in 2020 who has been in active disputes practice continuously since call would have approximately six years' relevant experience and would be eligible.

A lawyer called in 2018 who spent three years in a non-contentious or in-house role would have approximately four years of relevant disputes experience and would be eligible.

A lawyer called in 2017 who has been in active disputes practice continuously since call would have approximately eight years' relevant experience and would not be eligible.

A lawyer called in 2015 who spent four years in corporate transactional work would have approximately four years of relevant disputes experience and would be eligible.
