Singapore, 9 September 2026 – The Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) today launched the Wills Repository Service, a new service that enables individuals to securely deposit a digital copy of their Will with the SAL’s Wills Registry through participating law firms.
The Wills Repository service helps individuals ensure that a digital copy of their Will is securely stored, easily located and accessed by authorised persons when needed most. It will be offered through a network of participating law firms that have partnered with SAL to provide the service.
To use the new Wills Repository service, an individual needs to engage a participating law firm to prepare or review their Will and nominate the persons authorised to access his digital copy upon his passing. The law firm would then deposit the digital copy with SAL on the individual’s behalf.
SAL will offer complimentary deposits of digital copies of Wills through participating law firms from 9 September 2026 until 31 March 2027, to support public access and adoption of this new service.
Since 2020, SAL has administered the Wills Registry, which records whether a Will exists, who prepared it and where the original signed paper Will is kept, without storing the Will itself. This helps eligible persons identify where to look and whom to contact when a Will is needed.
Mr Yeong Zee Kin, Chief Executive of the Singapore Academy of Law, said, “When we make a will, we make decisions to provide for the people we care about. On occasion, such good intentions can be frustrated; such as by missing wills or uncertainties over the latest version. When this happens during a time of bereavement, families face added uncertainty and stress at an already difficult time. The new Wills Repository Service builds on the SAL Wills Registry, which helps eligible persons establish whether a Will exists and where the original is kept. Now, a digital copy can be retrieved from the Wills Repository Service. This provides another source of information about both the location and content of wills. This helps to strengthen trust within Singapore’s estate planning ecosystem.”

Safeguarding Privacy and Access
Digital copies deposited through the Wills Repository Service are protected by encryption and strict access controls, and can only be accessed by persons nominated and authorised by the testator. Digital copies are securely retained for up to 120 years from the testator’s date of birth.
Depositing a digital copy of your Will with SAL does not replace the original signed paper Will or determine whether the Will is legally valid.
Public Education Drive
Alongside the launch of the Wills Repository Service, SAL has also released a short public education video, “The Last Sign”, to raise awareness of the importance of making practical arrangements to help authorised persons locate a Will when needed.
The film uses humour to explore a situation many people may recognise: the uncertainty of not knowing whether a loved one made a Will, or where it was kept. At an already difficult time, that uncertainty can add to a family’s stress.
